Working With Onyx
Michael Lee, the owner. Onyx is a small, owner-operated business, so the person who answers your call is the same person who looks at your property, writes your estimate, and does the work.
Both. Most jobs are for homeowners, but Onyx also takes on commercial projects. If you own the property and need clearing, digging, or a wall, it's worth a call either way.
Yes. Forestry mulching, land clearing, excavation, and retaining walls are all done in-house. Many projects need more than one of these, and having one person plan the whole job keeps things simpler for you.
No. Onyx is not a tree trimming service and isn't set up with bucket trucks or chippers. The focus is on clearing and mulching land, not trimming or pruning standing trees. For that kind of work, a dedicated tree service is the better call.
Estimates and Payment
No. Estimates are always free.
The property location and a short description of what you'd like done is enough to start. Photos of the area are helpful if you have them. From there, Michael will talk it through with you and set up a time to look at the site if needed.
Cash, check, and card. Card payments are handled through the invoicing app Onyx uses, so you can pay right from your invoice.
A third-party financing option can be added to your estimate if you'd like it. The financing itself is handled by that outside provider, not by Onyx. Ask Michael about it when you get your estimate.
Scheduling and Hours
Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It depends on the time of year. Spring and summer are the busiest seasons, so scheduling can take longer then. The best way to know is to call and ask where things stand.
Winter changes what's possible, since snow and frozen ground limit a lot of land work. Some projects can still move forward depending on conditions, and Onyx has snow plowing capability during the season.
Service Area
Onyx is based in Montrose and works within about an hour's drive, including Lapeer, Metamora, Lake Orion, Howell, Owosso, and the communities in between. See the full service areas page for more.
Sometimes. Larger or multi-day projects outside the usual area are considered case by case, since the size of the job has to make the trip worthwhile.
Snow plowing is available on a limited basis, and it depends on where the property is and the size of the job. It isn't a good fit for small driveways far from Montrose. Call to ask whether your property is a match.
